Behind the Scenes at Suite on Jackson: What 5-Star Hosting Actually Looks Like in Amish Country
A five-star review looks effortless from the guest’s side. A clean suite, a warm welcome, a stay that felt easy from check-in to check-out. What that review doesn’t show is everything that happened before a single guest ever walked up the stairs on Jackson Street.
We wanted to pull back the curtain a little — not to pat ourselves on the back, but because we think guests who know what goes into a stay end up appreciating it even more.
Why We Chose Millersburg, Ohio
We didn’t stumble into Millersburg, Ohio by accident. Chad grew up in Holmes County, and when it came time to open our first property, Historic Downtown Millersburg felt like the obvious choice — walkable to shops and restaurants, and close to everything that makes Ohio’s Amish Country worth the drive.
It Starts Long Before Check-In
Every stay at Suite on Jackson is the result of decisions made days, sometimes weeks, in advance. The suite deep cleaned and reset. Fresh linens. Small details refreshed and checked. It’s the kind of prep work no guest ever sees, and that’s exactly the point — if I’ve done my job, the suite simply feels ready, like it’s been waiting just for you.
The Person You Don’t See: My Husband, Chad
Chad stays behind the scenes, but he’s the one I call the moment something breaks that a service company doesn’t need to handle. This past winter, we got 12 inches of snow on our newer, flat rolled roof. It caused a small leak — luckily in an inconspicuous spot — and Chad was up on that roof in the middle of it, making sure it got fixed before it became a real problem for guests.
He’s not involved in the day-to-day running of the rental, but when something needs a hands-on fix, he’s who shows up. He also makes the take-n-bake pizza available in our CVR Boutique — He genuinely loves cooking and is always chasing the version of that pizza that’s just a little more perfect than the last.
The Small Touches That Make It Memorable
Five-star hosting isn’t one big gesture. It’s a collection of smaller ones, repeated consistently, stay after stay:
- Answering a 9pm message about parking within minutes, not hours
- Rotating the local art on the walls so returning guests always find something new
- Our butterfly wall, a favorite spot for guests to capture a memory from their stay

- The post on our deck where guests can sign and date it — a small, growing record of everyone who’s stayed
- Choosing pieces for the space that tell a story, instead of just filling wall space
None of these show up in a listing description. All of them show up in how a stay feels.
Why We Obsess Over the Details
We started Cross-Key Vacation Rentals because we wanted to build something with real intention — a place where the details felt curated instead of accidental, where local art had a home, and where a couple’s getaway felt like an experience, not just a place to sleep. That intention is still what drives every decision I make, from the first walkthrough of a space to the moment a guest checks out.
The rotating local art isn’t decoration — it’s a working gallery I’m proud to share. The moments built into the suite, the soaking tub, the color-changing fireplace, the reading nook, the coffee bar, aren’t random amenities. They’re intentional pauses I hope you’ll actually use.
The Standard We Hold Ourselves To
150+ five-star reviews and Superhost and Premier Host status aren’t the goal — they’re the byproduct of holding ourselves to a standard on every single stay, whether it’s guest number one or guest number three hundred. That consistency is what we obsess over more than anything else.
I work for Cross-Key Vacation Rentals full-time now — this isn’t my side hustle. I clean, I decorate, I host, I handle the marketing. I wear a lot of hats, and I do it because I care, deeply, about getting the details right for every couple or small group who walks through our door.
What This Means for You
The next time you soak in the tub, flip the fireplace to your favorite color, or sign your name on the deck post, know that it didn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of a lot of care, a lot of small decisions, and a genuine love for creating a space worth remembering.
That’s what 5-star hosting actually takes. We hope you can feel it.
